Lighting Workshop -
5 shot evaluation -
Our task was to show different types of lighting in different shots.
The image above is our back lighting setup. We set it up by putting a light behind the subject. The lighting set up can create an outline to make a more 3D shot and to make the subject pop. It may be used in a scene where a character is unidentified and only the silhouette shows.
I think our setup worked really well because you can see an outline behind the subject. I think we could improve our back lighting by being able to control how much light was in the room. For example, there was already light in the room and lights from other groups so we were unable to get a clear back outline of the subject.
The image above is our low key lighting setup. We set it up by putting a key light to the side to put lighting on half of the subject. This lighting may be used to create a sinister mood. It may be used in a scene where a character is planning something, for example a murder planning his next kill.
I think our setup worked really well because only half of the subject is lit up. I think we could have improved our low key lighting by controlling the light in the room because it meant that the other side of the subject was still lit.
The image above is our top lighting set up. We set it up by putting a light above the subject. This lighting set up can create a more defined facial structure of the subject. It may be used to dramatise a character more.
I think our setup worked really well because the subject’s features are more defined. I think we could improve our top lighting by controlling the rest of the lighting in the room, which we were unable to do as there were other groups using lights and lighting in the room, which changed how much lighting we were able to control.
The image above is our under lighting. We set it up by putting the light underneath the subject’s face. The lighting may be used in a scene to make the character more menacing.
I think our setup worked well because the underneath of the subject is lit up. I think we could have improved our under lighting by making the light more on the subject’s face and making sure there was no background lights which we were unable to do as there were other groups lights and general lighting in the room.
The image above is our 3-point lighting setup. We set it up by putting a backlight behind the subject, a key light to the side of the subject and a fill light to the other side of the subject to add lighting to all sides of the subject to make sure they were fully lit from all angles. This lighting is used in tv shows to give a more realistic look to the general lighting.
I think our setup worked because the subject is clearly lit up with no shadows. I think we could have improved this by moving the fill light more to the front of the subject to take off the shine on the side of their face.
Through completing this task I have learnt how to setup different lighting shots and how outside lighting should affect the artificial lighting and how to work around this.
