  1. Explain how you are filling a gap in the market (500 words)

Programmes can fill a

gap because of:

Style/mode of address

Presenters (age, gender,

ethnicity)

Topic ( new angle, new issue)

Length

Audience ( a topic that has been explored before but for a new audience)

Conduct research with YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE

What do they think of your idea?

What mode do they like?

What mode of address do they like?

How do they think the topic should be addressed?

Who would they like to see interviewed?

What music, cutaways etc would appeal?

Do they watch the channel you are considering for distribution?

After conducting research, I would suggest that my target audience think the idea of discussing if graffiti is art or vandalism is very unique and would be able to visually appeal to the target audience. As the topic is based on art, this means that there would be a wider variety of cutaways that I could use in order to keep the audience interested. My target audience also thought that as my topic was based on exploring people’s views, it would allow the people being interviewed to give a wider perspective on the matter, which in turn would lead to the audience staying engaged in the documentary. After speaking to my target audience, a lot of them suggested that it would be a lot more interesting to use a voiceover to introduce and summarise interviews through the voiceover, instead of using a presenter. This was so that the audience would be able to focus on the content being provided through the cutaways and the interviews, instead of the audience focusing their attention on the presenter. This way, the audience is then further able to make their own mind up on what they perceive graffiti as being; art or vandalism. My target audience stated that they would like to see the topic being addressed through the use of different views. As a result of this I made sure that I will interview three different people with roughly different views. For example, by interviewing the graffiti artist and the police officer, I can gain a perspective from two sides of the debate. Furthermore, my target audience also suggested that they liked the people that I was thinking to interview as they felt that it would allow a wider range of my audience to be able to relate to the documentary and the information being provided. The music that I use will be instrumentals that relate to the target audience of 15 – 25 year olds who enjoy art. This will allow me to use music that will also appeal to my audience and keep them entertained from the music as well as the visuals. The music will play throughout the documentary and I will make it louder or quieter depending on if people are speaking or not. Also, I will include cutaways of both murals and tags across London, as well as cutaways of people walking and more general cutaways. For example, I will also include cutaways of the graffiti artist spraying and talking as a way of introducing his interview. These different cutaways will provide visually appealing footage to the audience, instead of just looking at one interview and losing focus as it becomes boring to watch. After asking my target audience, they also stated that they watch BBC Three programs and that they think this channel would be a good channel to distribute the program on as it suits the target audience as most people in the age range watch BBC Three. I believe that due to my topic, my documentary would further fill a gap in the market as it explores people’s views towards the topic, rather than being an educational documentary informing viewers of the different sides to graffiti. As my documentary looks at allowing the audience to form their own opinion, this is different angle compared to many other documentaries on BBC Three that are educational and inform the viewer of facts.
